If you are purchasing denim from Blue Owl and would like hemming, simply add a note on the cart page with your desired length - the service is free. Only order this service if you are shipping denim purchased elsewhere to Blue Owl for hemming. Please send us an e-mail to confirm your hemming request after ordering.

Chain-stitching is a hemming method that chains two threads together to create a more durable and flexible hem with the desired "roping" effect after being washed or soaked. The Union Special is one of the original machines used to create a chain-stitch hem on denim, and the Union Special 43200G we use is the second generation of the model from the 1950s. When possible we use the same thread used by the manufacturer. Otherwise, we do our best to match the thread color. Hemming is also offered in our showroom for Seattle area customers, no appointment needed.

  • $25 per pair of denim (plus any associated shipping fees and sales tax) for denim purchased elsewhere
  • Hemming is free on denim purchased at Blue Owl, but hemmed denim cannot be returned or exchanged
  • Turn around time is 2-5 days excluding shipping
  • Other alterations are not offered
  • Our machine is intended for use on denim. Lightweight fabrics, such as chinos, are easily damaged by the needle and we suggest taking elsewhere
